Workers at 5 area hotels authorize strike

Complaining of low wages and severe workloads, housekeepers and other employees at five area hotels authorized their union on Friday to call a strike.

The hotels include two downtown Los Angeles area establishments -- The Wilshire Plaza and the Holiday Inn -- as well as the Sportsmen's Lodge in Studio City, the Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica and the Marriott Manhattan Beach. Full story 

Boston Park Plaza, Sheraton Boston, Westin Waterfront and Westin Copley Hotels All Agree to Contract!

After more than six months of negotiations, a contract agreement has been reached between Boston hotel workers represented by UNITE HERE Local 26 and the Boston Park Plaza, Sheraton Boston, Westin Waterfront and Westin Copley Hotels. This historic contract includes all of the key terms that hotel workers have been fighting for throughout the negotiations: good wages, quality affordable healthcare, a safe workload and a secure retirement. Hotel workers stage sit-ins at restaurants

Hotel union workers “occupied” three restaurants in city hotels yesterday, distrupting lunchtime crowds and chanting, “No contract, no peace!”
Janice Loux, president of Unite Here Local 26, said the protests were necessary to send a signal that the hotels, owned by separate real estate investment trusts, have balked at signing a new contract agreement that the Boston Park Plaza Hotel OK’d last week.

Contracts signed by the four hotels, each managed by Starwoods Hotels, are considered key to future union talks with 15 other hotels in Boston.
